What I Made: Penny

What I Made: Penny

bodysuit outfit ideasFirst came Converse’s, then came the mom jeans. Sometime in the last couple of years, I started dressing like I was transported to the 90s. Check me out here – I even dared to pair the previous two in the same outfit when I was stomping around Manhattan Beach a couple weeks ago (FYI – the jeans are these Levi’s). Next up for fully embracing my inner 1990s Cindy Crawford? Bodysuits, bodysuits, bodysuits. In the past year, I’ve probably made as many bodysuits as I have lingerie. So, it’s no surprise that for my recent collection with Simplicity, a onesie was in the mix, the 8435. Available in both long sleeve and sleeveless, thong and full bottom, I’ve been making it on repeat. The iteration you see here today is just one of many. Even though this Pippi Longstocking movie came out in the late 80s, I appropriately named this one with a similar name to the lead character, Penny. That freckle face fictional character was one of my favs growing up. So incorrigible. Marched to the beat of her own drum. Yeh Pippi!

FABRIC + TRIMS
Self and combo/contract fabric:
Striped knit from The Fabric Store. I am in the process of (hopefully) offering this fabric for a kit, but in the meantime, there are a light yellow, heather grey and cream bodysuit kits available.
3/8″ Picot plush elastic: Used to finish the leg opening. The pattern directions say to serge and turn back (with the option of encasing clear elastic). I wanted this bodysuit to fit more like an undie though, so I used the PP elastic.
Dritz Snap Attacher and 16MM snaps (comes in the kit): To finish the center front placket opening.

PATTERN + CONSTRUCTION
This post is going to be photo heavy because there’s not much to say about the pattern or the construction. The pattern is the Madalynne x Simplicity 8435 and I followed all the instructions except I eliminated the snap crotch opening (cleaned finished front and back at crotch seam with crotch lining) and used picot plush elastic at leg openings. The center front placket can be a bit tricky to sew – full tutorial here – but other than that, it’s a super quick sew!

COMMENTS
Sure, you can say that I’m partial to this pattern because it is my own, but I really love it. Duh. I’ve been wearing it with skirts and those Levi’s linked to above. Come fall, mark my words, I WILL be wearing an 8228 underneath and slightly peeking through. Layering perfection.

skirt from Anthropologie, handbag from Neely & Chloe, shoes from Kate Spade
