The Only Black Dye I Use
For some of my sewing projects, and even my lingerie kits and workshops, I buy trims white and dye to the color I want. It’s difficult to source that perfect shade of blue or the lightest shade of pink to perfectly match the lace that you have in your stash. And trying to source picot elastic, strap elastic, hooks and eyes in the same hue will give you a headache. Believe me. I dye less now – as sales/orders for my lingerie kits and RTW lingerie grow, I’m able to purchase custom colors that have MOQs (minimum order quantities). When I was starting out though, my stove was used more for dying the cooking.
One of the hardest colors to achieve next to pale colors is black. Black RIT dye – yes, you can use RIT dye to dye your laces and trims – has a blue tint. It’s rather ugly if you ask me. The only dye that gets a true black this jacquard acid dye from Dharma (639 Jet Black). It’s super cheap and shipping costs ain’t that bad. I’m a huge fan of Dharma Trading – they have excellent customer service (they’ve even called me about orders) and the ‘description’, ‘instruction’, and ‘faq’ tabs on the product page will have you dying your first batch as a pro. Also check out the comments section for a lot of tips and tricks too.
So, I thought I’d share my find with y’all in case your in the same boat as I once was. If you’re not up for dyeing, no problem. Hop on over to the shop to skip a couple steps and purchase a Madalynne lingerie kit.

Years and years I’ve been reading your blog Maddie. I must thank you for such an excellent, elegant and inspiring site. I still can’t relate because I’ve always hated lingerie, but the heads up on black dye is very welcome. I have a bunch of discoloured napkins purchased at op shops which I hope to renew. Now all we need is the rain to fill our tanks because wringing one’s hands over dye pots full of water and the rinsing thereafter is no fun when the tanks tell you “if it’s yellow let it mellow” ! Thats Sydney for ya. X

Thanks Leslie! Hopefully I can inspire you to get into making your own lingerie.
