Why I Love the Necchi NC-102D

necchi nc-102d

It’s been about six months since I started sewing on Necchi’s sewing machine, the Necchi NC‑102D, and I’ve had plenty of projects to really put it to the test. From lingerie samples to workshop projects, this machine has been running nonstop in the studio.

The best way I can describe it? Small, but mighty.

I’m a firm believer that there is no right or wrong sewing machine — it’s about finding the machine that is right for you. Just like a car, they all technically do the same thing: they get you from point A to point B. But depending on what you need — city driving, road trips, hauling equipment — some cars will suit you better than others.

Sewing machines are exactly the same. Every brand has its own style, its own loyal users, and its own strengths. I don’t think one brand is inherently better than another. The key is finding a machine that works for what you actually sew.

So after six months of sewing on the Necchi NC-102D, here’s what I love the most about it.

Price

You honestly cannot beat the price on this machine. There are a lot of sewing machines on the market under $400, but I can confidently say that many of them will cause headaches if you try to sew anything beyond basic cotton. Once you start working with trickier fabrics — slippery knits, sheer mesh, stretch lace, or even denim — things can go sideways fast. Skipped stitches. Tension issues. A lot of seam ripping. Slippery fabrics? Denim? I pray for you 😅 But this little machine is shockingly reliable. I even taught a workshop where students used this machine to sew bras. Anyone who has made lingerie knows that bra-making involves tiny seams, delicate fabrics, and precise stitching. And yet every student’s project turned out beautifully — no skipped stitches, no tension drama. That alone impressed me.

Capabilities

Lingerie is not an easy sewing category. You’re dealing with fabrics like stretch mesh, lace, elastics, and sheer materials that can be unforgiving if your machine struggles with tension or feed. You need a machine that can handle delicate fabrics without chewing them up.

Every time we’ve sewn lingerie on this machine, it’s been a champ. No fighting with the machine. No weird tension surprises halfway through a project. Just smooth sewing. When a machine lets you focus on the sewing instead of troubleshooting, that’s when you know it’s doing its job well.

User Friendly

This might seem like a small detail, but I really appreciate how clean and simple the machine layout is.

Instead of having a million stitch icons cluttering the front of the machine, the stitches are organized on a little pull-out card hidden in the base. It keeps the machine looking streamlined while still giving you easy access to stitch options. It’s one of those thoughtful design features that makes the machine feel approachable — especially for beginners.

Design

Okay, I have to talk about the color. The chartreuse green on this machine is such a fun design choice. Most sewing machines stick to the same neutral palette — white, gray, maybe black. But this one? It actually has personality. It’s the kind of machine that adds a pop of color to your sewing room, which I love. Sewing spaces should feel inspiring, and little design touches like that make a difference.

After six months of sewing on the Necchi NC-102D, I can confidently say it has earned a permanent spot in my studio. It’s affordable. It’s reliable. It handles delicate fabrics beautifully. And it proves that a sewing machine doesn’t need to be huge or expensive to perform well. At the end of the day, the best sewing machine is the one that lets you enjoy sewing and brings your projects to life. And this little machine definitely does that.
