Bow Nouveau Sewing Guide

Tied up in the little details—because a bow makes everything better. Sweet, flirty, and just the right amount of extra, the March collection is basically that friend who always turns heads (in the best way). This is the first collection of the year featuring custom embroidered tulle laces and trims made exclusively for Madalynne—because if we’re doing bows, they’re going to be grown-up, chic, and absolutely not giving cute-sey, elementary school vibes.

This blog post is meant to be a guide to sewing DIY kits from the collection. Many times, when you make your Madalynne DIY kit, the product listing has been removed because it sold out, or it has been a long time. If the DIY kit is a variation of the original pattern, you may not remember what the variation was or how to do it. Don’t panic. This blog post will briefly outline how each kit is made and any variations. If you still have questions after reading this blog post, don’t hesitate to email hello@madalynne.com. I will do my best to help you understand how each kit was intended to be made.

Rey Underwire Bra: This is a variation of the underwire bra from Madalynne’s book, Sew Lingerie, that has exposed underwire casing and no wide band elastic at the bottom.

Top Bra Cup: One layer of non stretch galloon lace. Cut out and sewn as per instructions.
Lower Bra Cups: One layer of non stretch galloon lace and one layer of sheer cup lining. Cut out and sewn as per instructions.

Frame: One layer of flocked mesh and one layer of sheer cup lining.
Back Band: One layer of flocked mesh and one layer of stretch mesh.

*Since there is no wide elastic band at the bottom of the bra, you will have to adjust the width of the back band at the center back so that it fits into the hook + eye. 

Penelope Panty: Cut and sewn as per instructions.

Rey Underwire Bra: This is a variation of the underwire bra from Madalynne’s book, Sew Lingerie, that has exposed underwire casing. One version has no wide band elastic at the bottom (and lace sewn at the bottom of the front frame) and the other uses the frame of the Godiva bodysuit for the frame and back band.

Top Bra Cup: One layer of non stretch all over lace and one layer of sheer cup lining. Cut out as per instructions. Because there is no scallop lace edge on this lace, it is “clean finished” to sheer cup lining along the neckline. This variation is explained in the Godiva sew along.
Lower Bra Cups: One layer of non stretch all over lace and one layer of sheer cup lining. Cut out and sewn as per instructions.
Frame: One layer of non stretch all over lace or black all over lace and one layer of sheer cup lining.
Back Band: One layer of black stretch mesh.

Millie Panty: You could use several Madalynne patterns for the matching thong. The panty in the photos is the Millie, but the Tonika, Buffy or Odessa could be used.

Front Panty: One layer of non stretch all over lace
Back Panty: One layer of stretch mesh.

Madalynne X Simplicity 9802 Teddy: This version is sheer, as it’s sewn without a lining for the front or back. However, the DIY kit includes stretch mesh if you prefer more coverage. The flounces have raw edges for a delicate, airy look, but if you’d like the edged to be finished, the kit comes with fold over elastic. The panty styled with the teddy is the Penelope thong from the DIY Underwire Bra + Panty Kit mentioned above. Please note that the DIY kit does not include extra elastic for making this panty.

The star of this collection is the brand-new Monet Merry Widow! This DIY kit is sewn exactly as per the instructions, but does not incluce the foam cups (and doesn’t have trapunto stitching) or the waist tab (and elastics for the waist tab). So the DIY kits do not include these items.
