Let’s be honest. We live in a global economy where overseas manufacturing is a part of our reality. We sigh with nostalgia remembering the days of bustling American manufacturing districts where many of our garments and other goods were made. Pessimistic? I am not. There are good reasons and outcomes for international production. Lower labor costs have allowed for giant savings for both vendors and consumers. However, I believe there is a shift happening back to the US. I don’t believe it will be a rapid change and I don’t think that all production will come back. Why? Because our consumer conscience is changing. We want to buy from people, not from companies. We care about the who, what, where and how of the items we purchase.
For me, patriotic making and spending is most important because supports the passions of our people, the people like me. As a bonafide maker, made in the USA is the next best thing to handmade, something that I live and breath. At the age of 18, when I discovered sewing, me-made garments gave me control over what I wore. No longer did I have to succumb to the what mass manufacturers designed. By buying USA products, you and I are taking back control. We’re deciding the future of our country and making it better – adding jobs, putting money back into our economy and most importantly, supporting our people… supporting me.
