Recap: Mimi G Sewing Conference

Recap: Mimi G Sewing Conference

mimi gMimi G.’s 6th Annual Sewing Conference. The best way to describe the 3-day event was it was the realist conference/convention/gathering I’ve attended. The realist? This sums it up for you. It kicked off on Friday night with a fashion show where ladies walked down the runway wearing one of Mimi G’s patterns. As you will see in the photos below, there was one courageous woman who strutted down in a thong bikini. Mimi G. threw her hands up because hands down, this girl had it going on. So did all the other women. They all had it going on.

On the second day, Saturday, there were 2 morning sessions and 2 afternoon sessions. I taught an information, hour and half long class in the morning and in the afternoon about lingerie fabrics and trims. I taught to mostly new faces, but there were many familiar ones. Dari, Kaneisha and Chrissy were previous students who attended one of my bra workshops and it was wonderful to catch up with them. There were also two pretty freakin’ awesome ladies from South Florida, where I grew up, that I had the pleasure of meeting. Holla to Karen and Kelly!

When I wasn’t teaching, I was hanging out with the ladies of Spoonflower’s social team. I collaborated with the brand for the May workshop, designing a fabric with C. Banning, and will continue to collaborate with them through the fall. We have some exciting projects coming up! Stay tuned.

I also got to meet one of my favorite bloggers, Miranda Anderson from Live Free Creative Co. I’ve been following her for years and thought she was pretty incredible from the get-go. She gave an inspirational speech during lunch and the gist of it was ‘make it till you make it.’

Once the sessions were over, we headed to La Brea Avenue to shop at The Fabric Store. They didn’t have much lace for lingerie, but they did have an incredible selection of knits, and I scooped up a ton of fabric which I plan to use to make the Madalynne X Simplicity 8435. On the last day, Sunday, we hit up the fabric district to do some more shopping. I won’t share much about that because I will be following up with a post on my favorite stores for lingerie fabric shopping.

Mimi G. truly is an inspiration. Watching how she has built a solid business with a loyal following while staying grounded and real is what keeps me going. This year has been incredibly difficult, exciting, thrilling and all the other emotions that come with entrepreneurship. I wouldn’t trade this new life for the world, but during those times when I question my choice, I look at her and say, “If she can do it, so can I.”

And I can’t forget Simplicity, who sponsored to conference. Muchos gracias!
